My daily classifieds search had me stumbled onto a unicorn. This $1500 Subaru SVX is sure to be full of surprises. I wonder if it would be a bigger mistake than the Alfa Romeo 164 I posted last time.

I have restored a few of these. Make sure the transmission is sound is step #1, beyond that just give it a general once over. Great cars IMHO. Worst case get yourself a vanagon and swap the 6 banger into it, profit

"Only a few are still around" is kind of a back handed thing to say about the car you're selling when it isn't like 50 years old. They weren't abducted by aliens is what I'm saying...terrible fates have befallen those missing SVXs.

$1500?

How bad could it possibly be?

It doesn't help that of the 24,379 built for all markets between January 1991 to December 1996, only ~1,000 were imported into Canada. With some getting totaled for various reasons, used as parts cars, as well as used as engine donors for various projects, it's not that hard to believe that there aren't many around up there anymore.

Parts are rare.

But the car is a peach... if it has been well cared for, and in good condition, it is a great AWD Grand Touring car.

I wish I still had mine, I just couldn't justify the insurance and licensing, plus maintenance for a third car, and it was in less than pristine condition, but it ran and drove nicely.

Watch for transmission heat fatigue, it needs frequent trans fluid changes of burned fluid... the EG33 is more torquey than the 4EAT is good at handling. The engine is capable of more, but limited for the transmission. If the trans fluid is left too long, the internals may need to be rebuilt... and the car may already have had that happen.

The other known issue is wheel bearing fatigue for a fairly heavy car, by Subaru standards, ~3600lbs... other Subarus are not that heavy, and the wheel bearings heat up.

But the car is put together like a tank, and the H6 engine is butter smooth, and the styling is designer label, Giorgetto Giugiaro/ItalDesign styled a car that looks just as new today as it did in 1992.

Cash4Clunkers several years ago destroyed many in the US.

The one I had until recently, I bought to save from a California car crusher, due to a cold-start emissions test fail, which failed the whole regimen, and made the car un-registerable, and California was going to offer the owner 1000$ to crush the car.

I paid him the grand, and brought the car to the midwest. Finances forced me to sell it a few months ago, but I still see the car being driven around town.

There are probably others that didn't escape such an ignominious end.

Yeah, did you ever see the Cash4Clunkers list? It's terrifying. There's a Buick Grand National on there. Who does that?

These aren't unicorns. There are usually 2-3 on my local CL.

Buy this and a 2004-ish Sti salvage for a full swap.
